Tips to Purchasing Pre-Owned Pt. 1 | Luther Burnsville Volkswagen
Purchasing a pre-owned vehicle can seem like a frightening process. The amount of unknowns that can come with purchasing a pre-owned vehicle scare some people off from the process completely.
We think purchasing a pre-owned vehicle is a great option for a lot of people. They key to buying pre-owned is being prepared and knowing the right questions to ask. In an effort to make your shopping experience as hassle free as possible, we’ve complied six simple steps to take when purchasing a pre-owned vehicle. This week we are starting with the first three steps. Be sure to check back in two weeks when we will share the final three steps you should take when purchasing a pre-owned vehicle.
Our first three steps to purchasing a pre-owned vehicle deal with learning about the general condition of the car.
Check the Mileage
The first thing to do is find out the how many miles are on the car. Mileage is a big aspect when it comes to pricing the vehicle. If you have the opportunity, ask how many miles are on the vehicle before you see it in person. That will give you the opportunity to visit website sites like Edmunds.com to see if the price matches the worth of the car based on mileage.
Condition of the Car
It is important to ask about the general condition of the car. Having a conversation about this with the seller may bring up topics you didn’t think to ask about. Get specific with your questions like how fast does the air conditioning cool in the summer and how does the vehicle handle on slightly wet roads. When asking these questions, observe how the seller responds. If they stumble around their answer or seem uneasy, that may be a sign they are hiding things about that vehicle.
Examine Maintenance Records
To follow up on the general condition of the car, ask to take a look at the vehicle’s maintenance records. Check to see if the vehicle has been properly maintained and serviced over the years. Did the owner follow the recommended maintenance schedule to keep the vehicle in top shape? If the vehicle has a spotty maintenance history this could mean the owner didn’t take good care of the vehicle.
Remember, it always important to double-check the key features of the vehicle like the A/C, power locks, window, seats and mirrors, air bags, anti lock brakes, sound system, sunroof, etc. Be sure to come back next week for part two of Tips to Purchasing Pre-Owned to learn our final three steps to take when buying a pre-owned vehicle.
