A Change In the Weather

At the first sign of winter, everyone’s snow tires come out. While snow tires are helpful and improve your traction in wet and icy conditions, they are not necessary all year long. As temperatures start to rise, be sure to switch back to your all-season or summer tires. Not only are these more fuel-efficient, but this also helps your snow tires to last for more winters.

The Classic Penny Test

It would be hard to find someone who had not heard of this test before, but do you know how to do it correctly? Take a penny and hold it upside down with Abraham Lincoln’s head facing you. Next, stick the penny in each of the tire grooves on all four tires as shown in the image below. Those grooves should be raised enough to cover the top of Abe’s head. If the top of his head is showing, your tires have less than 2/32” tread depth and need to be replaced. Give our service team a call at 855-291-7615 to discuss what tires are right for you or schedule an appointment here.

Bare To the Bone

Take a look at your tires. If you see metal peeking through, even in the slightest, your tires are in need of immediate replacement. Take a break in what you are doing and come see our trained Service Center staff at Luther Burnsville Volkswagen. If you can see metal in your tires, they are far past needing to be replaced and are almost to their bare bones. Driving on tires in this condition is extremely dangerous and could lead to a blowout and possibly a collision. Click here for directions to our service center.

Bonus Tip: Put The Newest Tires in the Rear

It is often thought that the newest tires should always go up front. However, experts agree that your newest tires should be placed at the rear of your vehicle. Your rear tires provide stability to your vehicle. Without this stability you are more prone to spins, slips and skids on the road. So remember, when replacing only two tires at a time, place the newest tires at the rear.
